Losing weight, Coffee Enemas need not apply

Ok folks, that is it. I weigh 240 lbs. There, I said it. At a quick glance, I don't appear very fat. I am 6'4" (and a guy). 240 isn't that bad. But it is. I weighed 170 my senior year in high school. Just FYI - this isn't me, in case you were wondering.

Why am I telling you all this? Well, I figure if I put it out there, it will force me to get in shape and lose some fatty-ness. I actually weighed 246 3 weeks ago, so I am on my way. My goal is to get to 220, a weight I haven't seen since college. Losing weight is difficult and god damned stressful. I am constantly thinking about food. Not necessarily craving a burger or pizza all the time, but more "Hey, when is my next meal and what healthy items can I ram down my cake hole". Don't get me wrong, I crave a Big D from Duchess (CT folks will know what I am talking about, all others can go here) Incidentally, 5 years ago I went on a quest to eat everything on the Duchess menu and did it in about 3 months. But that is another story.

Also, I am effing hungry 73% of the day, even right after meals. I am committing to going to the gym at least 3-4 times a week too. And I am sure most of you, exercise sucks. I need to get people to go with just to be motivated.

Just FYI - this is me, in case you were wondering.

I would love to get any suggestions you all would have. Healthy snacks, exercise routines. I will not do a bullshit diet where I rule out carbs, or drink wheat germ, or do the Zone crap, or stick coffee enemas in my turd locker, Miss Quivers. They are all bullshit. I am trying to eat better and exercise. Updates to come.

Eat all the time. No, seriously. If you ask anyone with a great body how they eat, they'll tell you they have a meal at least six times a day. High protein, medium complex carbs, low fat. Lift weights. There ya go.

Mix up the exercise routine. Focusing on one thing will induce boredom.

Boredom is the third cousin of bad eating habits.

I recommend joining Weight Watchers. I know, it's gay, but you'll lose weight slowly and will be more likely to keep it off. As for food, LEAN protein and whole grain carbs. While beer has carbs, they're not complex enough. Beck's Light is the lowest in carbs and calories--one Weight Watcher point. Just don't drink 20 of them.

I think dieting is a lot about planning. When we're on the go we tend to eat fast food. Taking time to plan meals and snacks is the key. There are tons of low calories snacks--mini bags of popcorn, Hereshey's 100 calorie chocolate bars, Edy's Light ice cream. Oh, and Jarlsburg Light cheese is the BEST cheese out there. Reading labels is a must.

I actually eat healthy foods. It's the beer that's my problem. I can't do Becks anymore. Got turned on to hoppy micro-brews and there's no turning back.

As far as exercise, you need to aerobic exercise at least 3 times a week.

As for Phil Specter, he created the "Wall of Sound" in the Beatles' records.

Good luck and cheers!

You should visit the website Bodybuilding.com. When I was dieting, this website helped me out tremendously.

I have a suggestion: Don't ever post that picture again.

I've gained about 40 pounds since college. But then I weighed about a buck fifty in college.

Sounds like you and I have basically the same build, and are going through the same things. Although you said you don't like, how did you put it, "bullshit diets", but South Beach works well. All you eliminate is bad carbs (for the first couple weeks). I usually have eggs for breakfast, salad for lunch, and steak or chicken and veggies for dinner. Mix in healthy snacks (as Shark said, you'll want to eat six times a day or so) and the constant hunger is a non-issue. And of course keep up your gym routine.

Good luck!

Which gym are you joining?

I am transferring my membership from Stamford's Planet Fitness, to the one up here that is right near Super Duper Weenie.

Want to hit the gym together and go on an all chili-cheese-nitrates diet?

my two hints for losing weight:

a.) download ricky gervais' podcasts for your workouts -- they're about 10 mins. each, and if you listen to 3, you've done your 30 mins. on the treadmill, and been entertained in the process

b.) don't change your diet, change your beverage intake -- if you replace sodas, juice, beers, etc., with water, you'll see a dramatic weight loss within two weeks (unless you drink diet drinks already -- then you'll see no difference whatsoever)

I agree. Weight Watchers is the way to go. But don't go to the meetings. Just join online or steal the points book from somewhere. Bottom line, the only way to lose weight is to ingest less calories than you burn. I can't give up beer and burgers, so I exercise. But something else may work for you. Good luck!!

Weight Watchers is working for me. Steady two pound loss per week so far. Agree with commenters who said to eat smaller meals more frequently throughout the day. It'll kill those cravings and sugar highs and lows. By doing this, I don't have the equivalent of three dinners every night like I used to.

You don't have to stay at the meetings, just go for the weigh-ins if you think having to stand on a scale in front of a stranger will help motivate you (that's what I need, but I don't stay for the too-long meetings). Good luck!

Oh, and FWIW, the woman to man ratio at the meetings looks like 3:2, so you're not going to be the only guy there.
